WASHINGTON:
US President Donald Trump will meet North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim
Jong-un in Singapore on June 12, marking the
first-ever face-to-face engagement between the serving presidents of the two
countries.
Trump himself made the announcement on Twitter on Thursday morning, shortly after the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo returned to Washington in the wee hours with three Korean-American prisoners who were freed by Pyongyang.
Trump went to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland outside Washington to receive them before tweeting: The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong Un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th. We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!
The North Korea breakthrough could well become Trump’s signal foreign policy achievement particularly if it leads to a complete and verifiable denuclearisation of the region.
